김근영의 그림은 사실적인 묘사가 탁월하다. 실제를 넘어선 표현력으로 그림이 꿈틀거리는 듯 입체감까지 선사한다. 또한 김근영 그림에는 고양이가 빠짐없이 등장한다. 우편함에 앉아있는 고양이, 가로등 위에서 뛰어노는 고양이, 비내리는 도시 속 고양이. 작가에게 고양이는 주인공이자 방관자이다. 야생성을 띄며 인간 곁에 머무르는 고양이들이 매력적으로 다가왔다는 작가는 가상의 공간에 자유롭게 고양이를 배치하 여 몽환적인 분위기를 만들어낸다. 김근영은 작품을 통해 세상에 길들여진 모든 억압으로부터 숨겨두어야만 했던 자아를 이야기한다. 세상의 방관자로 살아 가는 고양이처럼 관람자 역시 가끔씩이라도 자신의 털을 고르며 지나간 시간을 되돌아보길 바라는 마음으로 그림을 그린다.

Through her work, Kim Geun-young tells the story of an ego that had to be hidden from all the oppression that was domesticated in the world. Just like a cat living as a bystander in the world, viewers draw pictures hoping to look back on the past by picking their own fur even from time to time.
